Baby Jogger City Select Review

City Select Stroller

Review by Josephine Watts

BUY NOW City Select Single Stroller SPECIAL OFFER FROM AMAZON

Company Description

Baby Jogger was founded in 1984 by Phil Baechler. Mr. Baechler was a journalist and a jogger and when he became a father, he soon found out that the strollers available at the time were not strong enough, nor suitable for jogging. He designed the first three wheel stroller and it was so good that other stroller manufacturers soon copied him. Baby Jogger still produces quality strollers today.

Basics

Baby Jogger’s City Select retails for approximately $499 and is designed to be a multi-function stroller that has many combinations of seats, bassinets and car seats. It is a very customisable stroller. It can be easily adapted into a complete travel system and can convert from a single to a double stroller. This stroller has many accessories available (extra) and this means that you can tailor the stroller better for your needs.

City Select Stroller Reviews and Features

Maneuverability

The 8″ front wheels swivel and the stroller is very easy to steer with one hand. I thought the air filled tires and size of wheels would make the stroller difficult to push but this was not the case. This stroller handles well on city streets or on short, parkland grass. I regularly take a shortcut across our park and there is very little difference in the effort required to push it if the grass is short. Longer grass and gravel require more effort but nothing excessive. I have had to use the stroller in 2″ of snow. This was not a problem and it remained stable. The wheel size certainly helped here.

Folding

The fold is easy and the space used is not bad. To fold, just lift the two levers marked “fold” and the stroller easily collapses with either the seat attached or removed. It has a narrow width but it still takes up a lot of room lengthways. If you own a minivan or a car with a reasonable size trunk, then this will not be a problem. I only used this stroller as a single and so I cannot compare it when used as a double but it cannot be folded when in double mode with the seats attached.

Seat

The seat is reversible and is relatively tall but not as wide as the Valco Baby Snap which is 14″ wide and the City Select is 12″ wide. It is fully reclinable and this is ideal for newborns. The seat has a 5 point harness and this was easy to operate for me but not so easy for my daughter to unbuckle. However adjusting the straps can be fiddly. The padding was good. I have read where people say the seat is too small but this has not been my experience. My daughter weighs 37 pounds and still fits comfortably in the seat. Using the manufacturer’s data, it is lighter that the iCandy Peach which is 32lb. The seat footrest is adjustable to 4 positions up or down. The seat fabric is easily cleaned.

As a double, the extra seat is full size and not reduced size which seems to be the common thing now. As a double, the seats can be independently facing forward or back.

Bassinet

Not tested

Canopy

The canopy has a three part fold and provides extremely good protection. There is a mesh zip-in backing that can be zipped into the front for extra sun protection if the sun is low. The canopy also has a peek-a-boo window with a built in mesh and the design incorporates a magnetic closing attachment that makes operation very quiet. Much quieter than the more common Velcro attachments found on other strollers. It is adjustable for height (up to 24″) for larger children. This is one of the best canopies that I have seen on a stroller.

Shopping Space

The cargo basket is very large. There are zippers on all sides and I guess this gives you more options for access but I always use the rear access. It has a large capacity but it has a weight limit of 15lb. It is very accessible in single mode. I regularly use the foot well to store shopping. Extra storage is also available and easily accessible at the rear of the seat.

Wheels

The rear wheels are 12″ diameter and the front wheels are 8″ diameter. The tires are air filled. The front wheels swivel and have suspension. These are a good size wheel for a stroller and mean that you are not restricted to paved surfaces. The relatively large wheels, combined with the front suspension, mean that the ride is extremely smooth and comfort levels for my baby were high. Normal bumps were absorbed easily and going over grass or gravel was not difficult. The front wheels can be locked for easier traveling over rough ground.

Handlebar

There is a telescopic handlebar that adjusts from 38.5″ to 41.5″ and this is more than sufficient for average to tall people. I am 5′ 4″.

Brakes

The brakes are hand operated and very easy to use.

Accessories

The following accessories are available but some cheaper ones can be found that will fit universally.

Summary

Overall, this is a terrific stroller and can be easily customised. I think it is great as a single stroller but it will really come into its own as our family gets bigger. If I had only wanted a single stroller, I would certainly have been able to get something cheaper. But the beauty of the City Select is its adaptability and that it can easily convert to a double or even carry a third cild on a ride-on board. This is not a jogging stroller. The size is good and it is by far the best stroller I have used to date.

I did not like the fact that the stroller comes with no accessories. A belly bar and a rain cover should be included with any new stroller. The City Select is a great stroller but if you have to use public transport, you will find it too wide and this makes it awkward.

Safety Tips For Your Stroller

Stroller Safety

Mothers are familiar with their strollers and how to use them. They might know the essential things about the stroller yet there are many other items that may affect your stroller safety and as a parent, you should be aware of this.

Some of these items you should be familiar with, but some will not be so familiar. Continue reading and find out how to use your stroller and keep your baby safe at the same time.

The stroller will have an instruction book supplied with it. Before using the stroller, examine the instructions thoroughly.

Always read the instruction manual for your stroller.

Make sure you are familiar with attaching and detaching the stroller seat. There is an audible click whenever the seat or bassinet is attached securely on many strollers. The Bugaboo Cameleon is a good example of this.  Releasing the seat normally involves pressing the buttons on either side of the seat and lifting off. However this can vary slightly between manufacturers. Read the instruction manual to find out the correct procedure for your stroller.

The handlebar on many strollers can be adjusted for height. To avoid hitting your feet on the crossbar, make sure the handle is extended to a proper length.

It is sometimes possible to reverse the handlebar and this allows the large wheels to be positioned in front. This characteristic is very helpful when you have to travel over rough ground.

Do not get in the habit of hanging things from the handle bar. Surplus weight on the handle bar could cause the stroller to become unstable. It is better to use the cargo basket on the stroller (normally located underneath the seat).

At all times ensure your child is secured firmly in the seat. Always buckle the 5 point security harness on the seat. Never allow your child to sit in the seat unsecured. If the stroller ever did fall over they would be protected by the frame if they are correctly strapped in.

Some strollers can be easily converted into two wheel mode whenever traveling over rough ground or terrain. Try and use this feature when the opportunity arises.

When the stroller is in the 2-wheel mode it can be pulled over soft surfaces like gravel or sand much easier than pushing it. It is much less likely to overturn.

Use the brakes whenever you have to let go of the handle bar. When you are on a hill, this will keep your stroller from rolling away from you. Try to park the stroller at an angle on a slope as it will also be less likely to roll.

Make sure that you use the sun shade. Protect your babies skin from UVA and UVB. The sunshade on most strollers is quite easy to use and will block out up to 70% of the sunlight.

It is vital that you on no account, ever leave your child unattended whenever using the stroller. For obvious reasons stay near to your child and your stroller.

Check your tires regularly. Look for cracks on the sides. Make sure the tires are firm. Inflate the tires (if necessary) to the correct pressure if they are soft. Only ever use a hand pump as a garage tire pump could simply over inflate the tires which would be harmful.

When you can hardly make a dent in the tyre with your thumb, you will have inflated the tire to the right pressure. Remember – not all tires can be inflated.

Conclusion

As you can see, all of the above is just common sense however it is all important for the safe use of your stroller.

Valco Baby Snap

Company Description

Valco Baby has been producing baby products in Australia for over 30 years and has recently started selling their baby strollers in the USA.

Basics

The Valco Snap is a single stroller with a lightweight frame and three wheels (the front wheel is a double wheel). It has a large seat and canopy and the seat has a five point harness. It also has a recline. Retail price is approximately $220. There is no bassinet option but it is suitable for newborns and can handle a child weighing up to 44 pounds which almost puts it on a par with the UPPAbaby Vista. The stroller only weighs 13 pounds and this makes it ideal when travelling by air or if you have to lift it a lot. This stroller was designed with convenience in mind and it shows. It is available in four colors (black, cornflower, perriwinkle and silver) and the hood is available in nine colors.

Valco Baby Snap Specification

Valco Snap PROS

Valco Snap CONS

Valco Baby Snap Stroller Reviews and Features

Maneuverability

The Snap is easy to push with one hand. The wheels are a little harder than pneumatic wheels and this makes it easier to push but a little more bumpy for baby. It is very easy to steer and as can be seen below, the front wheel can be locked in position for extra stability when traveling over rougher ground.

Folding

The fold is easy but it does require both hands and as you probably already know by now, I really dislike having to use both hands for folding. I like that it folds inwards as this keeps the seat protected. The fold requires you to push a button on the handlebar and simultaneously press a button on the side. Once the fold starts it is pretty easy to grab the frame with one hand to continue the fold. There is a locking mechanism which was very convenient. It is possible to unfold with one hand. It will stand by itself when folded.

Seat

For such a light stroller the seat is very roomy. It could use more padding but it will suit most babies and little ones. As you would expect today, it has a five point safety harness. The safety harness is child proof and young children will not be able to unfasten it. Adjusting the harness can be fiddly but you will not have to do this too often unless you carry different children in the seat. The seat can recline from fully upright to almost fully flat. It is very easy to adjust using the Valco strap system. The rear seat pocket can be folded up to provide better seat ventilation when it is hot. Adaptors are available for Graco, Peg Perego, Britax, Chicco and Maxi Cosi Car Seats.

Toddler Seat

Not tested

Bassinet

Not available

Canopy

The canopy is large and provides good protection. It has a peek-a-boo window. The peek-a-boo window has snap fittings and I found these awkward and fiddly to fasten. Velcro would have been better.

Shopping Space

The shopping basket is easy to access and is a good size.

Wheels

The rear wheels are 10″ and the front wheel is a double wheel and is 8″. All the wheels are puncture proof but this does affect ride comfort as the bumps seem to get transferred through the frame to the seat and handlebar. All the wheels are easily detachable. The wheels are a good size for maneuverability. The stroller is easy to steer. When traveling over rougher ground, the front wheel can be locked into position which stops it from being twisted when traveling over bumps.

Handlebar

Unfortunately the handlebar is not adjustable but this was not a problem for me. However I think it will be a problem for tall parents.

Accessories

  1. Valco Baby Snap Single Stroller in Periwinkle
  2. Valco Baby Universal Cup Holder, Black
  3. Valco Joey Twin Toddler Seat
  4. Valco Baby Hitch Hiker Ride On Board, Black
  5. Valco Baby Universal Stroller Roller Travel Bag, Orange/Black
  6. Valco Baby Allsorts Universal Seat Pad
  7. Valco Baby Glo Bugz Flashing Safety Lights
  8. Valco Baby Universal 3 Wheel Rain Cover
  9. Valco Baby Universal 3 Wheel Sun Shade
  10. Four Seasons Footmuff Color: Candy Apple

Summary

We liked this stroller because of its price and its size. It is a single stroller and it has basic features with lots of baggage space that is easily accessible. This Valco Snap Review was pretty thorough and we found that even though this is not a really fancy stroller, it performed well in almost all areas. Maneuverability was good but comfort levels could have been better. The seat was large but could use more padding. The safety harness was good but could be tricky to adjust. For portability, the Snap will rival most other strollers for its size and weight.

Review by Fiona Alpine
BUY NOW - Valco Baby Matrix Stroller - SPECIAL OFFER from Amazon

Valco Matrix

Company Description

Valco Baby has been producing baby products in Australia for over 30 years and has recently started selling their baby strollers in the USA.

Basics

The Valco Matrix is a three wheel, all terrain stroller that is very maneuverable. It retails for approximately $375. It is easy to steer and will suit newborns. There is a large range of accessories available for this stroller. Folding is a little more difficult than other strollers. This stroller can handle most types of surface. It is available in three colors: black, grey and taupe. It seems to be a cheaper version of Valco Baby’s all terrain range and the price is good for the performance.

Valco Baby Matrix Specification

Valco Matrix PROS

Valco Matrix CONS

BUY NOW - Valco Baby Matrix Stroller - SPECIAL OFFER from Amazon

Valco Baby Matrix Stroller Reviews and Features

Maneuverability

Even though the Matrix has large, air filled wheels, it is surprisingly easy to push and to steer. This is not normally the case with large wheels. It performs really well on paved surfaces. We took it on our uncles gravel driveway which has a lot of holes in it but with the front wheel locked, we had no problem pushing it.

Folding

This is not the easiest stroller to fold and we really would have liked an automatic lock when folding but there is a strap to keep it secure. The fold requires both hands. It can be folded even if the optional Joey seat is attached. It is quite a large stroller when folded (larger than the Valco Baby Tri Mode Stroller).

Seat

The seat material is easy to wipe clean and is durable. The outer fabric is breathable. There is a five point harness and this has had reflective strips added to it which really makes it visible at night. The seat has the standard Valco footrest made of metal. This is rugged, easy to clean and comfortable for children.
The seat has a one had recline and can be set totally flat or almost vertical and anywhere in between.

Adapters are available for car seats. There are adapters for Graco, Maxi Cosi, Britax and Peg Perego car seats.

Toddler Seat

There is a toddler seat available “Joey seat” but this was not attached to our stroller.

Bassinet

We did not use a bassinet.

Canopy

The canopy is large and like the Valco Baby Tri-Mode, it has a zippered extension that works well. However, any adjustment to the canopy is noisy and can wake your baby. Like the safety harness, the canopy has reflective piping attached to improve visibility at night. The canopy has a “Peek-a-boo” window.

Shopping Space

The shopping basket is very small (15″ x 11″ x 8″). In fact it one of the smallest that I have ever used and certainly will not be suitable for many parents. Once I had my diaper bag in it, there was very little room for anything else. So make sure you check this before you buy.
There is a storage pocket on the back of the seat and this is very handy for pocket items like cell phones etc.

Wheels

There are three, air filled wheels. The wheels are large (12″) but this does not seem to affect the maneuverability. The front wheel can be locked in one of three positions:

This is very useful when travelling over rough surfaces as it prevents the front wheel from digging into ruts.
All of the wheels are very easy to remove if you need more space in the trunk. A hand pump is included with the stroller in a separate pouch should you need to pump up a tire.

BUY NOW - Valco Baby Matrix Stroller - SPECIAL OFFER from Amazon

Handlebar

The handlebar has a tether strap and this is a valuable safety feature. Thankfully it is adjustable for height and will accommodate all but the shortest or tallest people.

Accessories

Summary

The Valco Baby Matrix easily grows with your family. I can be converted into a double and even carry a third, standing child. It is stylish and well built and will handle most types of terrain with ease. The seat reclines fully and it can easily and comfortably carry newborns. If you are looking for a very maneuverable, all terrain stroller for less than $400, then this may be the stroller for you.
Overall, I think that it looks terrific and that it is good value for money.

Valco Baby Zee Two Main

Company Description

Valco Baby has been producing baby products in Australia for over 20 years and has recently started selling their baby strollers in the USA.

Basics

The Valco Baby ZEE Two is a double stroller and retails for approximately $480 to $530. The front wheels can be locked and the tires are tubeless. The seats are easily reclined and are of a good size with a five-point safety harness. It folds easily and is relatively compact. It is not a jogging stroller but it is better than an umbrella stroller but it fills the gap between the two and does exactly what it is supposed to do. It is available in three colors: Jet (Black), Sapphire and Blue

Valco Baby ZEE Two Reviews and Features

Maneuverability

The Zee is very easy to push and steer with one hand. I am 5′ 4″ and certainly not fit but I have no problem pushing this stroller with my two babies (weighing 50 lbs). The lockable front wheels make it much easier to go over loose surfaces such as gravel. It is Narrow enough to fit through most doors and all but the narrowest of shopping isles. I have had no problems in crowded streets. The rear suspension leads to a very smooth ride for baby but I think that if the front wheels were just a little bit bigger, the ride would be even better.

Folding

With just a little practice, the Zee is easy to fold and unfold. There is no automatic lock when folding but it does have straps and clips to hold the frame in position. When opening the stroller, it does automatically lock into the open position.
When folded, the Zee takes up relatively little room even with the wheels attached (see dimensions above). Folding can be a little tricky at first but you soon get used to it. Weighing less than 30 lbs, it is fairly easy for me to lift it in and out of my trunk.

Seat

There are two seats and they can recline individually. The seats are very well padded. The recline can go fully flat and this is essential for newborn babies. Each seat has a five point safety harness that is very easy to use.
If you want to carry a third child, you have the option of buying a joey seat. This is a seat that sits in between the two seats and at a higher level. There is also a carrier attachment and a hitchhiker board for an older child to stand at the rear.

Toddler Seat

There is an option of a third toddler seat that can be fitted between the two stroller seats (at a higher level).

Bassinet

This stroller is not equipped to carry a bassinet.

BUY NOW - Valco 2012 ZEE Twin Stroller in Blue Opal - SPECIAL OFFER from Amazon

Canopy

Each seat has its own canopy and there is a zip fastener that allows the canopy to extend even further if required.

Shopping Space

The cargo basket is enormous and is better than most other brands. It is one, large net basket and is accessible from behind the seats. It truly is big and easy to access. I love it.

Wheels

The two rear wheels have suspension that really helps smooth out the ride. The two front wheels can swivel or be locked into position for rougher surfaces. All of the tires are tubeless so you will never have to worry about getting a puncture.

Handlebar

My big gripe about this stroller is that the handlebar is not height adjustable. It was fine for me but not for my partner who is 6′ tall.

Accessories

Summary

The Valco Baby ZEE Two stroller is a great all rounder. It is much more robust than an umbrella stroller but not as tough as a Jogging stroller. It is light for a double stroller and it is just the right size for crowded city streets. This is really an urban stroller but will be suitable for occasional of-road use. We liked this stroller for its ease of use, maneuverability and compactness. It can be expanded to hold a third child. Although suitable from birth, it does not accommodate a bassinet. This stroller is good value for money.
